Texas floods claims 50 lives
Search and rescue teams have been working overnight to find those trapped or swept away by the fast-rising waters. Kerr County alone reported 43 confirmed deaths, including 15 children, while Burnet County recorded three fatalities and two missing persons. In Travis County, four deaths and at least 13 missing individuals were reported.
Kerr County Sheriff Larry Leitha said up to 25 people—mostly children—remain unaccounted for, believed to be attendees of an all-girls Christian summer camp near the riverbank in the town of Hunt. The camp was hit during the early morning flooding.
Dalton Rice, city manager of nearby Kerrville, described the flood as sudden and unpredictable. “The event happened very quickly, in under two hours, leaving no time for evacuation orders,” he explained.
Flash floods are a common hazard in Texas during intense rainstorms. For example, in August 2022, flooding in the Dallas-Fort Worth area caused one death and widespread damage. Kerr County Judge Rob Kelly remarked that although the region is prone to floods, the scale of this disaster was unprecedented and unexpected.
By Friday night, emergency crews had rescued or evacuated 237 people, including 167 airlifted by helicopter. With more rain forecast, Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick cautioned that the risk of flash floods will continue for the next day or two across areas stretching from San Antonio to Waco.
